Georgia: Mtskheta

Updated: Oct 6

Date: 27th, 2024.

Mtskheta, located approximately 27 km from Tbilisi, is the former capital city of Georgia. It typically takes between 30 minutes to 1 hour to reach the city. This small, peaceful town is surrounded by lush greenery. The key tourist sites include Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, Samtavro's Convent, Jvari Monastery, and a stroll through the historic city center.

My visit was limited to Svetiskhoveli Cathedral, a massive structure. The stone design of this Orthodox church is notably understated when contrasted with the intricate architecture of European Catholic cathedrals. Nonetheless, the interior of the building features a significant number of murals, paintings, and stone elements. Originally constructed as a wooden church in the 4th century, it was later rebuilt in the 11th century and remodeled in the 14th century. Further details can be discovered here.

It was interesting to see that when I visited in the morning, it was drizzling and there were prayers taking place with no tourists around. The women and monks were dressed in black, which was different from the white gowns worn by monks in churches in India and Europe. I spent 3 hours listening to their prayers instead of engaging in typical tourist activities.

There are good number of shops who sells Georgian delicacies, wine tasting, suveniors and some interesting art. One can also go for a lake ride in a boat which I have not done.

Although I couldn't visit Jvari Monastery, I managed to take some photos of it from the cathedral.
